Sun Survival

At willa, we believe your skin is your best makeup™, so you need to take care of it everyday – and one of the most important parts of keeping your skin beautiful is protecting it from the sun! The reason Christy and Willa created willa is because Christy had skin cancer at 29, and didn’t want her daughters (Willa’s sister Julia is 9), or any other girls, to repeat her skincare story. Although most of us are aware of how necessary sun protection is, there are some pretty scary facts out there. In the past three decades, more people have gotten skin cancer than all other cancers combined. If that doesn’t have you slathering on SPF, think about how much the sun can visibly damage your skin – 90% of fine lines are caused by sun exposure, and most of the harm to your skin that causes those wrinkles will happen by the time you’re 18.

We’re so excited that its summer time, but June 21st (the longest day of the year) just passed and the sun will be out the strongest. Because we don’t want you to be part of those statistics, we did all the research why putting on our Face the Day each morning is the best decision that you’ll make each day. Here are the three main things you need to know:

1. It’s not how high your SPF is that gives the best protection, it’s how often you’re applying it. A lotion with SPF 30 will block about 97% of UVB rays, and increasing your coverage to anything over SPF 40 will only increase protection by one or two percent. If you ask any doctor, most will recommend that you regularly use an SPF 30—so you’re much better re-applying our Face the Day SPF multiple times rather than just using the that goopy SPF 70 once. (Tip: It takes 30 minutes for your sunscreen to start working, so your first application should always be before you’re actually in the sun!)

2. Know the different between the two types of sunrays: UVA and UVB. Most sunscreens will only protect from UVB rays, which are the main culprit behind a nasty sunburn. However, the sun also emits UVA rays, which cause deeper sun damage later in life, such as wrinkles, sunspots and hyperpigmentation, sagging, and coarsening. However, both can cause cancer, which is why its important to always us products that are labeled “broad-spectrum” or “UVA/UVB protection” (like ours!).

3. The two main formulations of sun protection products on the market are either mineral or chemical. Mineral SPFs contain ingredients like zinc and titanium that will physically deflect damaging rays, while chemical formulas absorb them. A mineral sunscreen sits on the surface as your skin as a barrier, while chemical sunscreens sink into your skin and enter your bloodstream, which can lead to hormone disruption and abnormal growth (something we definitely don’t want to happen to you). At willa, natural ingredients are a top priority, so you will never find harsh chemicals in our products.

We hope that this told you everything you’ll ever need to know about sun protection and more, but if you have any “burning” questions, let us know! (pun intended ☺)
